About

“I don’t take pretty pictures.” -- Linda Kessler

“Linda Kessler is an admirable talent who has always been able to find the spiritual core of her subjects. She has a wonderfully quiet center that reaches out in a patient way to make contact. Her photographs bring out the best and enlighten all that is good and right in a beautiful world that too often is viewed through a dark prism. Very few have the native intelligence to appreciate the difference and Linda Kessler definitely knows the difference.”

Painter and photographer Linda Kessler once stayed in a 14th century chateau in Burgundy; lived in a 200 year old stone house in Brittany with no indoor plumbing; drove Noam Chomsky’s car; slept on a riverboat in a hammock in the Amazon; and jumped out of a plane at 13,500 feet.

Linda Kessler is an American artist- painter and photographer. She lives and works in New York City and has traveled and lived in Iceland, China, Brazil, Cuba, Italy, France, Morocco, Mexico Portugal and other regions of the world. “Painting and photography, for me is a metaphor for the struggle of life’s acceptance. My work is a process of transformation. Rather than come to terms with life through religion or another means it is my work which enables me to work through… By decomposing and recomposing materials, and reworking shapes, lines, colors, and textures I work the piece until I reach a balance and finality. Layers upon layers are built similar to what human beings are, still showing the imperfections that brought us who we are.” “I photograph what speaks to me. The ordinary is the most compelling and extraordinary. As a photographer I have always gravitated toward faces and the street. Photography gives me the privilege of having a glimpse into people’s lives and honoring them with images. It is the vulnerability and the humanness, in many ways hidden in daily life, which I try to discover.”

Linda Kessler was born raised in New York City. A pivotal point in her childhood was experiencing the World’s Fair which inspired her to travel the world, see and learn about the amazing varied cultures that exist in the universe. She picked up my first camera at 8 years old and had her first exhibition of a painting which traveled to Japan, when she was 10 years old. Loving the magic of photography and the inner depth and process of painting catapulted her to the realm of creativity and working in the arts, which continues to this day. “It feeds my soul, nourishes me and helps me reflect on what life is all about. It’s not about taking pretty pictures, but seeing something that speaks to my core of what humanness means.”
